Manager Justin McNulty has named the following side to face Clare:
Permutations: A win for Laois will highly boost their promotion chances to Division 2.
Table:
Changes to the new rules:
1. Change to 3v3: 4 players must now stay in their own half at all times, the goalie will still be able to move forward past the halfway line, however there must be 4 teammates behind the goalkeeper as this occurs. Players lost to black and red cards will now have to retain 3 players up in the opposition half.
2. Accidently breaching the 4 back-3 up rule: Players will now not be punished for going up to 4 metres across the halfway line nor if they aren’t interfering with play.
3. Kick out mark: Player is allowed to move 4 metres forward unchallenged by opposition when he claims a mark from a kick out. Free kicks will be moved up 50m and up to oppositions 13m line if a player in possession after a kick out mark is challenged by the opposition within 4m after claiming the mark. Option to bring back outside 40m line for a 2 point free applies.
4. Advantage: has now occurred if a point or goal is scored. If no advantage has occurred, for a player awarded a mark: referee will signal no advantage and the ball will be taken back to the point of the mark.
5. Directly: has been removed from the definition of 2 point score. Kicked from outside or on the 40m arc, a strike hitting the crossbar or upright before going between the posts for a point will count for 2 points.
6. Misconduct by team officials: to cost their tram a 13m free (allowed to be brought back as 40m 2 point free)
Round 5 recap: Laois vs Antrim:
Laois: 0-22
Antrim: 1-17
Laois: Mark Barry 0-8 (five frees), Niall Corbet 0-4, Damon Larkin 0-3, Killian Roche (two-point free) and Pa Kirwan 0-2 each, Brian Byrne, Ben Dempsey and Danny O’Reilly 0-1 each
Antrim: Niall Burns, Patrick McBride (one two-pointer), Michael Byrne (two-point free, one 45) and Dominic McEnhill (one free) 0-3 each, Conor Hand 1-0, Ryan McQuillan and Dermot McAleese (two pointer) 0-2 each, Conchuir Johnston 0-1
Standout Players for Laois:
Niall Corbet was excellent all game in attack: he was out in front of Antrim’s Kavan Keenan, twice to intercept the ball. One of these interceptions led to Corbet’s own pt from play and the next Interception, set up Brian Byrne with a scoring chance blocked by an Antrim defender. Niall Corbet then won a free in shorty after this play. Corbet set up his teammates also with great scores: and all from Corbet’s effective, accurate and quick hand passing skills throughout: a hand pass from out wide by Corbet into Danny O Reilly, in front of goal for another great Laois goal chance. Niall Corbet’s high ball winning ability was brilliant all day too and he won long ball from Kevin Swayne, to then hand pass off to set up Damon Larkin with a Larkin point from play.
Damon Larkin had his best display of the 2025 league campaign in midifeld for Laois: with all long range points scored after winning kickouts and making superb pacey runs into attack. Larkin defensively worked hard also with a tackle and great interception made on Antrim’s Fionn Nagle in the Laois back line, which turned over possesion and as he ran forward into attack, layed the ball off to directly lead to a Ben Dempsey for Laois point from play.
