Laois 1-18 Kerry 1-17: Late Byrne Winner Keeps Promotion Push on Course.
Laois made it four wins from four in Division 2A with a dramatic 1-18 to 1-17 victory over an unbeaten Kerry side in Laois Hire O’Moore Park, sealing the contest with a 74th minute point from substitute Cormac Byrne.
It was a result shaped by wind, discipline, puckout dominance and nerve. More importantly, it keeps Laois firmly in control of their own destiny in the race for promotion and a place in the 2026 Division 2A Final.
The Match: Controlled Chaos in Portlaoise
Half-Time: Kerry 0-09 Laois 0-08
Kerry arrived unbeaten and had the breeze at their backs in the opening half. Ronan Walsh was clinical from placed balls, finishing with 0-10 overall, nine from frees. Their inside line caused problems, particularly when Laois turned over possession in their own half.
Yet Laois limited the damage.
Cillian Dunne opened from play. Aaron Dunphy, who finished with 0-08, kept the scoreboard moving from frees. David Dooley and Ryan Mullaney chipped in. Trailing by just one at the break while playing against the wind was a manageable position.
The Third Quarter Surge
With the breeze behind them, Laois seized control.
The defining battle was under puckouts. Ryan Mullaney dominated aerially, disrupting Kerry’s restarts and launching attacks. Between the 36th and 55th minutes Laois outscored Kerry 0-07 to 0-03.
Jack Kelly was central to that spell, striking four second-half points from play. Direct running, clean first touch and quick release were hallmarks of Laois’ best phase.
Dunphy edged them in front in the 42nd minute and momentum was building.
Discipline Turns the Tide
The game swung further when Kerry were reduced to 14 men after Michael Leane’s second yellow in the 51st minute. It worsened in the 67th minute when Kyle O’Connor was dismissed for a second bookable offence after fouling Cillian Dunne.
From the resulting penalty, Podge Delaney rifled the ball to the corner.
At 1-17 to 0-17 entering the final minutes, Laois appeared home.
Late Drama and Character
The Kingdom though, refused to fold. Walsh narrowed the gap and in the 73rd minute his 65 dropped short and broke to Oisín Maunsell, who finished to the net to level the game at 1-17 apiece.
Momentum had flipped.
Laois responded immediately. From the restart they worked the ball wide to Cody Comerford. His delivery into the square broke kindly and Cormac Byrne showed composure to slot the winner in the 74th minute.
Game over.
