St. Joseph’s Edge Out Timahoe in Junior Football Championship Final

Final Score: St. Joseph’s 1-15 Timahoe 1-12

In a hard-fought Junior Football Championship Final, St. Joseph’s put on an impressive display of work rate, high-intensity defending, and clinical scoring to claim victory over a spirited Timahoe side.

First Half: Tightly Contested Battle

St. Joseph’s opening score came early from a pointed free by Seán Rowan. Timahoe quickly responded through Sean Ramsbottom who picked up a lovely long ball from Joe O’Connor to get his side off the mark.

The action remained back-and-forth throughout the opening 15 minutes:

Matty Campion restored St. Joseph’s lead with a rapid, energetic run from deep.

St. Joseph’s extended their lead following a kickout won by Mikey Fleming leading to a score by Sam Lynch after brilliant setup play from center-back Aidan Brennan.

Damien O’Connor for Timahoe dominated kickouts early on, trading scores with Sam Lynch to keep Timahoe right in touch.

Sean Ramsbottom levelled the match at 0-4 apiece on 10 minutes with a long-range 2-pointer.

St. Joseph’s edged ahead 0-5 to 0-4 by the 15th minute via another Seán Rowan free. Throughout the half, Aidan Brennan anchored the St. Joseph’s defence with supreme discipline, forcing key wides off Timahoe’s Conor Fitzpatrick and placing heavy pressure on Damien O’Connor.

Further points from Seán Rowan and Cormac Murphy gave St. Joseph’s a three-point cushion at 0-8 to 0-5 going into the halftime break, capped off by a vital turnover from Brennan on Timahoe midfielder Colm Lalor right before the whistle.

Second Half: St. Joseph’s Maintain Control

St. Joseph’s started the second half on the front foot. Seán Rowan and Sam Lynch both split the posts to stretch the lead to 5 points (0-10 to 0-5) by the 38th minute.

Timahoe refused to go down without a fight:

Damien O’Connor won a key kickout, setting up a Sean Ramsbottom 2-pointer.

Damien O’Connor followed up with another 2-pointer of his own to reduce the gap to 0-12 to 0-9 by the 43rd minute.

However, St. Joseph’s responded decisively. Defensive hero Aidan Brennan executed a crucial turnover on Timahoe substitute Padraig Kelly and quickly launched a counterattack that set up a Seán Rowan point which very nearly yielded a goal. Scores from Bobby Rowan and another from Seán Rowan pushed St. Joseph’s ahead 0-14 to 0-9 with 12 minutes remaining.

Closing Stages

With St. Joseph’s holding a commanding buffer entering the final 10 minutes, the pace slowed as they cleverly controlled possession and managed the clock. Late scores came from Sean Ramsbottom, Damien O’Connor and Pauric Ramsbottom for Timahoe and Conor Kealy for St. Joseph’s.

Though Timahoe kept pressing into injury time searching for a late goal chance, St. Joseph’s held firm to seal a deserved 1-15 to 1-12 championship victory.

Man of the Match: Aidan Brennan (#6, St. Joseph’s)

Creating Goal & Point Chances: Early in the match, Brennan picked out Sam Lynch with a pinpoint pass to set up a score. In the second half, he executed a crucial dispossess on Padraig Kelly that launched a fast break, directly setting up a Seán Rowan point that nearly resulted in a goal.

First-Half Turning Point: Right before the halftime whistle, Brennan made another vital turnover against Timahoe midfielder Colm Lalor and won a defensive free for goalkeeper Dan Dunne to take, ensuring St. Joseph’s went into the break with a 0-8 to 0-5 lead.
