We preview both the Minor and Senior hurling games taking place on Saturday May 4th, where both teams are in Championship action.

First up at 3pm, our Senior hurlers travel to Tralee in Round 3 of the Joe McDonagh Cup to take on Kerry in a top of the table clash. Laois and Kerry are the 2 teams in the best form so far with both sides winning 2 games from 2 previously. Laois are currently 1st place on 4 pts and Kerry are in 2nd place on 4 pts. With both sides level on points, Laois take top spot on score difference.

Next up, at 5.30pm. Our Minor hurlers travel to Kilcormac for the Leinster preliminary quarter final to take on neighbor’s and rivals Offaly in an anticipated clash. The winner of Offaly vs Laois will be through to a Leinster quarter final versus Dublin (3rd placed in Tier 1) set to take place 7 days later on Saturday May 11th.

Laois scorers: Tom Og Phelan 1-6, Tony Mahony 1-0, Ross Deegan 1-0, Kyron Cuddy 0-2, Eoin Delaney, Shane Connolly, Conor Headen, Eoin Bracken 0-1 each.

Half back Tony Mahoney was unstoppable in possession, excellently struck the ball throughout, scored a goal from a long distance free himself and hit another long range pass to assist another scored goal by Tom Og Phelan.

Eoin Delaney was consistent and brilliant at half forward. (0-1 from play). Shane Connolly provided pace and strength in midfield (0-1 from play also). The introduction of substitute Ross Deegan was very positive and he had a great impact on the game. (1-0 from play).

The well experienced Willie Dunphy was Laois’ highest scorer from play with an excellent 1-4. Also in top form were Martin Phelan and James Duggan scoring great goals from play . The midfield duo of David Dooley and Aidan Corby were very solid.

Fiachra C Fennell made his 50th overall appearance for Laois senior hurlers vs Meath last weekend. The 96th hurler to do so.

Picky Maher against Meath set a new Laois hurling record of 23 championship wins, breaking the tie with Matthew Whelan.

Laois are the 13th side to score 50+ points in senior hurling championship history.

It has been done 10 times in the Liam MacCarthy Cup, once in the Christy Ring and now twice in the Joe McDonagh.

In the shock but well deserved opening round win over Westmeath, Fionan Mackessy produced a brilliant defensive performance at half back, scored a total of 4 points with 2 from play and then assisted Maurice O Connors goal. O Connor was accurate in free taking duties scoring 0-10. Versus Down, Mackessy scored another 2 points and O’Connor also converted 7 frees and 6 points from play. Dan Goggin also came to the for with his performance vs Down and he scored 4 points from play.
