Joe McDonagh Rd. 5 – Laois Vs Kerry – Preview
Laois Senior Hurlers travel to Austin Stack Park, Tralee this Saturday May 13th to face Kerry in Round 5 of the 2023 Joe McDonagh Cup (throw in at 5.30).
The permutations for Laois getting to the Joe McDonagh final are simple. Laois require a win Vs Kerry combined with Laois also requiring Offaly (who have already qualified for the final) to win in there Rd. 5 game Vs Carlow (also being played at 5.30pm on Saturday) to setup a Laois Vs Offaly Joe McDonagh Cup Final to be held in Croke Park on May 27th/28th.
Team news: There are 2 changes to the Laois side that defeated Kildare in Round 4. Aaron Dunphy and Liam O’Connell (who returns on Saturday after not featuring against Kildare having served a one match suspension from the Carlow game in Round 3) replace Tomas Keyes and Ryan Mullaney.
One’s to watch: Rathdowney-Errill’s Ross King put in a man of the match performance in midfield against Kildare having scored 5 points from play. Clough Ballacolla’s Aidan Corby was also excellent in midfield and Laois manager Willie Maher was full of praise for both players after their performances in the Kildare match. Rosenallis clubman Fiachra C. Fennell put in a tremendous defensive performance at full-back. Both Ross King and Fiachra C. Fennell made it into the GAA.ie Hurling Team of The Week on Monday May 8th. Laois have also averaged a score of 9 points per game more than Kerry throughout the Joe McDonagh Cup campaign.
