Standout Players (Laois)
In attack: James Keyes: displayed excellent pace and strong ball carrying skills, winning a free which Mossy Keyes converted for Laois’ opening score. James Keyes also executed a brilliant tackle on James Burke in midfield to force a turnover. Later, after a superb run out wide, he registered his first point from play. In the 2nd half, James Keyes continued his fine form, scoring a second brilliant point from play, bringing his total to 0-2.
In defence: Diarmaid Conway: produced four perfectly timed and strong tackles to dispossess Kildare’s Cathal Dowling, who was a constant threat at full forward. Conway also read the play excellently to intercept a dangerous ball aimed towards Jack Sheridan.
Podge Delaney was outstanding with his long range accuracy, scoring his first free from inside his own half. He repeated the feat with a second free from a similarly impressive distance, converting 2 out of 3 attempts from well inside his own half.
In goal: Cathal Dunne made a crucial intervention early in the game, racing out to intercept a dangerous ball from Simon Leacy, who was bearing down on goal, and clearing the danger. In the 2nd half, Cathal Dunne delivered a moment of brilliance with one of the greatest double saves seen in hurling. First, he made a remarkable stop from Kildare’s Cathal McCabe and was quick back up on his feet then to immediately deny Jack Sheridan on the rebound.
