Dramatic Late ’65 Earns The Harps Victory Over Castletown in U-20 Championship Thriller

U-20 Hurling Championship Round 1

Full Time:

The Harps 3-11 (20)

Castletown 1-16 (19)

A dramatic, injury-time ’65 struck by center-back Eoghan Murphy sealed a breathless one-point victory for The Harps in a enthralling U-20 Championship Round 1 clash with Castletown. In a match filled with exceptional individual skill, pendulum score swings, and towering long-range frees, both sides fought relentlessly before The Harps ultimately edged out a 3-11 to 1-16 win.

First-Half Blitz and Castletown’s Fighting Comeback

The Harps burst out of the blocks, racing into a 1-04 to 0-00 lead inside the first five minutes. Mark Downey opened the scoring with two rapid points from play before Justin Duggan dispatched a 3rd-minute penalty into the net. Half-forward Tony Mahony then added back-to-back points from play as The Harps controlled matters early on.

Castletown refused to panic and mounted a heroic fightback, spearheaded by the tireless work ethic of wing-forward Raymond Goode. Kyron Cuddy got Castletown off the mark from play on five minutes, setting off a run of six unanswered points. Tom Óg Phelan displayed superb accuracy from dead balls, converting five long-range frees including efforts from 70 meters out and midfield, to bring Castletown back within a single point at 1-04 to 0-06.

The Harps stemmed the tide in the 23rd minute with the standout skill move of the match. Mark Downey executed a brilliant hook and turnover, played high ball into Donal Deegan, who flicked a one touch volley-style pass in the air back down to Downey to pop over from midfield.

Castletown finished the half on top, however. Kyron Cuddy pointed from play before Raymond Goode leveled the game on 29 minutes after receiving a sharp diagonal pass from Tom Óg Phelan. Moments later, midfielder Ryan Byrne pointed from play to hand Castletown their first lead of the match at 0-09 to 1-05 at the break.

Second-Half Drama and Goal-Mouth Frenzy

The second period began as a tight, tactical battle with both sides trading scores. Tony Mahony leveled the game from a free for The Harps before Ciaran Lyons nudged Castletown back ahead. Ross Deegan and Kyron Cuddy traded points from play before another Mahony free restored parity at 1-08 to 0-11.

Tom Óg Phelan kept Castletown’s scoreboard ticking with two more monstrous frees from over 70 meters out, but a Jimmy Whyte point kept The Harps right on their heels.

The game exploded into life in the final 10 minutes:

  • 50th Minute (Goal – Castletown): Kyron Cuddy worked tirelessly under extreme pressure to maintain possession and forced a harps defender to cut his clearance short. The loose ball broke back to Raymond Goode, who drilled a deflected shot straight into the net to give Castletown a 1-13 to 1-09 lead. Tony Mahony responded immediately with a converted free to cut the gap to three.

  • 51st Minute (Goal – The Harps): Straight from the puckout, Jay Brophy struck a clinical goal to draw The Harps level at 2-10 to 1-13.

  • 52nd Minute: Tom Óg Phelan nailed an extraordinary 75-meter free to put Castletown back in front.

  • 54th Minute (Goal – The Harps): Jay Brophy made a clever diagonal run before floating a crisp pass across to Eoin Delaney, who buried The Harps’ third goal to push them two points ahead at 3-10 to 1-14.

  • Injury-Time Finale

Castletown threw everything forward in the dying moments. Ryan O’Connor sliced the deficit to a single point on 26 minutes, and in the 31st minute of the second half, Daniel Whelan showed composure to score the dramatic equalizing point from play at 3-10 to 1-16.

With extra time looming, The Harps carved out one final attack in the closing seconds, winning a late ’65. Center-back Eoghan Murphy stepped up under immense pressure and cleanly slotted the ball over the bar to snatch a dramatic victory for The Harps at the death.

Man of the Match & Runner Up

Man of the Match: Tony Mahony (The Harps – #12)

Tony Mahony delivered a complete half-forward masterclass. Dominant on breaking ball throughout the entire match, Mahony was the central engine for The Harps orchestrating attacks while contributing a vital 0-05 to the scoreboard (two classy points from play during the explosive opening five-minute blitz, followed by three crucial, high-pressure second-half frees).

His aerial dominance on puckouts was game-changing; he repeatedly soared above the opposition to claim high balls, including back-to-back puckout catches in the 27th and 28th minutes of the first half that directly launched dangerous goal-scoring opportunities for Mark Downey and the inside line.

Beyond his attacking display, Mahony’s relentless work-rate made him a defensive nuisance, he constantly tracked back deep into his own half, winning hard physical turnovers, earning converted frees under heavy contact (at the 35th, 42nd, and 20th minute of the second half), and executing a brilliant diving block on Castletown’s Fionn Cuddy in the 37th minute to deny a certain score.

Runner-Up: Raymond Goode (Castletown – #12)

Raymond Goode put in an extraordinary, heroic performance that drove Castletown’s relentless fightback from 7 points down. Operating with incredible pace, physical power, and stamina, Goode covered every blade of grass. In the first half alone, Goode’s hard work turned the tide: he forced two crucial turnovers in the 5th and 8th minutes that earned Tom Óg Phelan’s opening frees, created a long-ball goal chance following a neat flick from Ryan Byrne (9′), and tracked back to collect loose defensive ball to clear Castletown’s lines (18′).

His second-half display was just as impactful intercepting a dangerous pass from Justin Duggan (44′) that led to another converted free, making key defensive clearances, and delivering a clever diagonal pass off a 65 for his own first-half point (29′).

He also dropped deep into defense to sweep up loose balls, making vital clearances under pressure, and launching Castletown attacks. He delivered a brilliant block on Mark Downey, laid off clever diagonal passes into the inside forward line,Goode capped off his 1-01 tally in the 50th minute when he grabbed a panic clearance that he intercepted and finished clinically to the back of the net. Great awareness to be first out to this short clearance to grab the goal.
