Standout Laois Players v Wicklow:
Aaron McEvoy

Aaron McEvoy’s defensive work was outstanding in the Round 1 Tailteann Cup win over Wicklow. His well worked turnover on the sideline sparked a rapid Laois counterattack, with Kevin Swayne denied only by a superb Wicklow block after McEvoy’s quick thinking and intensity won possession back.
McEvoy’s reading of the game stood out all afternoon. One outstanding interception on a loose Wicklow ball completely halted a dangerous attack and immediately turned defence into attack for Laois. That turnover proved massive, as it directly led to Evan O’Carroll’s goal.
McEvoy’s man-marking pressure, relentless chasing and work rate forced Wicklow into rushed decisions, including one key moment where his pressure forced a Wicklow forward to shoot wide under serious pressure. He also contributed going forward, playing an important role in the build-up to Kevin Swayne’s point.

James Keyes

James Keyes made an immediate impact after coming on as a substitute in the 52nd minute, setting up Aaron Dunphy brilliantly for a goal. Keyes burst through on goal before unselfishly passing to Dunphy, who fired into the roof of the net. It was a wonderful assist from Keyes and a great finish by Dunphy.
Keyes also won frees, claimed plenty of possession, and repeatedly put himself in front to win the ball ahead of opponents. He also delivered a lovely diagonal ball across the field to his midfielders to maintain possession and keep the attack moving. Keyes finished with a total of 0-2.
