Laois 3-18 Kerry 0-13

Laois have been crowned Allianz Hurling League Division 2 champions following a commanding 3-18 to 0-13 victory over Kerry at O’Moore Park on Saturday afternoon.

The result completes a perfect league campaign for Laois, who recorded six wins from six in the group stages before delivering a composed and clinical performance in the final to secure the title on home soil. It represents a significant achievement for the panel and management, reflecting consistency, development, and a growing level of performance across the duration of the league.

Fast start sets the platform

Laois made an excellent start to the contest, asserting themselves early despite playing against a strong breeze in the opening half. The hosts demonstrated intent from the throw-in, pressing high up the field and forcing early turnovers which quickly translated into scores.

The opening goal arrived within the first few minutes when Tomás Keyes reacted quickest to a breaking ball inside the Kerry defence. Showing composure and awareness, he gathered possession and finished decisively to the net, giving Laois an immediate advantage.

Moments later, Laois struck again. A delivery into the danger area caused difficulty for the Kerry defence, and after a contest for possession, the ball broke kindly for Cillian Dunne, who finished emphatically to the bottom corner. Two goals in quick succession gave Laois a strong foothold in the game and set the tone for the remainder of the contest.

Kerry did respond with points from play and placed balls, but Laois continued to dictate proceedings. Aaron Dunphy opened his account early and would go on to play a central role throughout the game, both from frees and open play.

Control established across the field

Following their early goals, Laois settled into a controlled and structured performance. The defensive unit, led by Ian Shanahan, Lee Cleere, and Cody Comerford, worked tirelessly to limit Kerry’s scoring opportunities, while also providing a platform for counter-attacks.

At midfield, David Dooley and Aidan Corby were influential in securing primary possession and linking defence with attack. Their work rate and positioning allowed Laois to maintain territorial advantage, particularly important given the conditions in the opening half.

In attack, Laois displayed a balanced approach, combining direct running with accurate shooting. Tomás Keyes added further scores from play, while Jack Kelly and Ryan Mullaney contributed to the overall attacking threat.

Dunphy’s accuracy from placed balls ensured that Laois continued to extend their lead, punishing any infringements and maintaining scoreboard pressure.

Nine-point lead at half-time

As the half progressed, Laois continued to build on their early advantage. Scores from across the forward line reflected a collective effort, with contributions from multiple players ensuring that Kerry were unable to focus on any one attacking threat.

Kerry did remain competitive in patches, with scores from Liam Óg O’Connor, Ronan Walsh, and Jordan Brick helping to keep them within reach. However, Laois consistently responded to these scores, maintaining control and ensuring that the gap did not close significantly.

By the interval, Laois held a deserved 2-11 to 0-08 lead. Considering they had played the first half against the wind, the advantage reflected both their efficiency in attack and their discipline in defence.

Second half control and decisive third goal

With the benefit of the wind in the second half, Laois were well positioned to manage the game effectively. They resumed with the same level of intensity and quickly added to their tally through Dunphy and others.

The decisive moment of the second half came when Fiachra C-Fennell delivered a long-range effort towards the Kerry goal. The ball caused uncertainty in the defence and ultimately ended up in the net, extending Laois’s lead significantly and effectively ending the contest as a competitive fixture.

From that point onward, Laois demonstrated composure and game management, controlling possession and limiting Kerry’s opportunities to mount any form of comeback.

Defensive discipline and structure

A key feature of Laois’s performance was their defensive organisation. Throughout the game, they maintained shape and discipline, preventing Kerry from creating clear goal-scoring opportunities.

The full-back line dealt effectively with Kerry’s inside forwards, while the half-back line provided both defensive cover and attacking impetus. Turnovers were quickly converted into attacking situations, highlighting the team’s ability to transition efficiently between defence and attack.

Goalkeeper Cathal Dunne also contributed with assured handling and distribution, ensuring that Laois maintained control from the back.

Attacking efficiency and scoring spread

Laois’s attacking play was characterised by efficiency and variety. While Aaron Dunphy led the scoring with 0-11, the contribution from across the forward line and supporting players was equally important.

Tomás Keyes finished with 1-02, while additional scores from Cody Comerford, David Dooley, Aidan Corby, Jack Kelly, and Ben Conroy underlined the depth of attacking options available.

The ability to convert chances, particularly in key moments, ensured that Laois maintained scoreboard pressure throughout the game.

Kerry effort acknowledged

Kerry continued to compete throughout the contest and showed resilience, particularly in the second half. Liam Óg O’Connor led their scoring with 0-04, while Ronan Walsh and Jordan Brick also contributed.

However, they were unable to match the consistency and accuracy of Laois over the course of the game. Missed opportunities, particularly in the second half, limited their ability to reduce the deficit.

Perfect league campaign completed

This victory concludes a highly successful Allianz Hurling League campaign for Laois. Winning all six group games before securing the final represents a significant achievement and highlights the progress made by the squad.

The consistency shown throughout the league, combined with the quality of performances, will provide confidence as attention turns to the championship.

Focus shifts to Joe McDonagh Cup

With the league campaign complete, focus will now shift to the Joe McDonagh Cup. The experience gained and momentum built during the league will be invaluable as Laois prepare for the challenges ahead.

Performances such as this final underline the potential within the squad, and there will be confidence that the standards set during the league can be carried forward into the championship.
