PIHC Semi Finals Recap:

Ballinakill v Rathdowney-Errill: on Saturday September 21st

Ballinakill: 4-18 (30)

Rathdowney-Errill: 1-18 (21)

Standout Players:

Ballinakill:

Lir McDonald was excellent at left half back: with runs out to intercept dangerous balls twice in the opening minutes, made a great block on a shot from Shane Dollard to prevent a score, won multiple high balls in defence and made accurate passes to Seamus Fitzpatrick to aid in scores. McDonald (0-2) then produced the score of the game: with a huge run the length of the field , down the sideline and scored just outside the 45. Very strong in midfield was Ethan Drury (0-1) who won puckouts and set up both Paul Simms and Seamus Fitzpatrick goals. The attacking combination and teamwork on display by Simms (3-6) and Fitzpatrick (1-3) was superb. Alongside scoring their goals, their fast hand passing and runs into space, had both players set up 1 of each others goals, aswel as 2 of the points from play by Gearoid Lynch (0-3) and Ethan Drury (0-1).

Rathdowney-Errill:

Daniel Bowe (1-3 frees) and Shane Dollard (0-3) were immense and dominated midfield throughout. Shane Dollard scored all of his points from play from long range, one from just inside the 65m line and the rest from difficult angles out wide. Dollard aided in defence also with a strong tackle to win a sideline ball and turnover possession. From this, helped set up a Daniel Bowe point also. Daniel Bowe won a great amount of puckouts with strength to fend off markers and had strong hands for clean catches, he was also very effective when he ran out wide and scored from this. He won frees and scored 3 of them, before striking home a penalty goal with power. Dan Bowe also made a great tackle to prevent an Eddie Dwyer score. Ray Bowe was full of energy up front with 4 points from play, which were all excellently taken. In the 2nd half alone, he scored 3 points from play from long range and his 4th whilst he beat 2 markers.

Borris in Ossory-Killcotton v Camross: on Saturday September 21st.

Borris in Ossory-Killcotton: 0-26

Camross: 0-7

Standout Players:

Borris in Ossory-Killcotton:

PJ Scully continues to be in top form as free taker for his side with great accuracy from dead ball strikes. He scored a total 0-9, 8 of these frees and 4 of these were scored from way out. 3 frees were outstanding and scored from well inside his own half with the 4th from the 65 line. In defence, right half back Niall Coss was very solid in defence but he also contributed massively to his sides scoreline with an attacking role as he ran forward. He scored a total 0-4 from play, and set up an Aaron Dunphy point. Beside Niall Coss in the half back line, centre back Noah Quinlan was brilliant too. Quinlan made a total of 8 interceptions, which led to turnovers in possession throughout as he ran out in front of markers to win all sorts of ball sent his way and directly set up 2 of Niall Coss and Aaron Dunphy’s points from long balls alongside setting up a PJ Scully goal chance that was saved.

Camross:

Midfielder Niall Bennett was really impressive, as he won 3 puckouts, in the 1st half, followed up by good long passes up front to set up attacking opportunities. Jack Phelan was in midfield but he stood out for his defensive contribution mainly, doing well in a defensive duty. He made strong tackle on Jer Quinlan followed up by a super high catch to prevent a ball going into the box to Emmett Jones. Andrew Collier worked hard in attack and alongside scoring a great point from play (whilst he won a puckout and fended off defensive pressure by 2 markers), he won ball effectively when he ran out wide. Full back Daniel Breen produced a massive block to deny Neil Foyle a certain goal and Ben Deegan’s scores from play (0-2) are notable as they were excellently taken alongside, his scores from frees (0-4) as he is a reliable free taker.

SHC Semi Finals:

Rathdowney-Errill v Abbeyleix St.Lazarians: on Sunday September 22nd

Rathdowney-Errill: 1-19 (22)

Abbeyleix: 3-10 (19)

Standout Players:

Rathdowney-Errill:

James Ryan (0-1) was very good in midfield, with a great display of ball winning ability and accurate puck passing to teammates. Though his standout play was his strong tackling; he made a tackle, a turnover and won a free out from Sam Quinn in midfield all in the one move, he made vital tackles to win the ball back from Fionan Mahoney, Eoghan Fennelly and prevented a 2nd goal from Colin Byrne, before slotting over a brilliant point from play from midfield. Goalie Damien Madden crucially made a total of 4 point blank range saves to prevent goals, shot from Colin Byrne, Cormac Byrne and Lawson Obular. In attack, Tadgh Dowling (0-3) and Ross King (1-7, 4 frees) combined for superb scores and were electric up front. Dowling worked hard to turn over the ball on the midfield sideline, and ran through on goal with great pace to lay off to Ross King to strike the ball into the net. A goal vital for the win in the end.

Abbeyleix:

Corner back Eamon Fitzpatrick and Centre back Lawson Obular combined, produced a really solid defensive display. Fitzpatrick made 3 great blocks on Scott Pearson shots and Obular made 3 interceptions and a block from Brandon McGinley, both players displayed physical strength in tackling also to prevent attacks and Obular got out in front to intercept a dangerous ball aimed for Tadgh Dowling. In attack, Cormac Byrne (0-2) and Colin Byrne (1-1) were excellent. Colin Byrne’s lightning pace and ability to get around defenders, led to him scoring 1-1 from play in quick succession in just 2 minutes, 1 minute between each score in the first 7 minutes of the 1st half. Moments later, Colin had another goal chance saved. Cormac had a goal chance himself and his 2 points from play were scored as a result of his great pace to come in from out wide to beat multiple markers, and cut inside to score. Cormac set up an Eoghan Fennelly point also.

Clough-Ballacolla v Camross: on Sunday September 22nd

Clough-Ballacolla: 1-20 (23)

Camross: 2-13 (19)

Standout Players:

Clough-Ballacolla:

Corner back Diarmuid Conway done very well in defence and limited the attacking threat of Camross as he won frees out, made clearances, interceptions and tackles plus blocked down shots aswel to prevent scores. Left half back Jordan Walshe was outstanding throughout as he won an abundance of high balls sent into the Camross forward line and his 4 points from play were all from long range, all slotted over from midfield. Corner forward Stephen Bergin was very lively in attack with 1-1 from play and his point was excellently taken from a difficult angle whilst being marked. Bergin also set up Aidan Corby with a goal chance that was saved by Tadgh Doran.

Camross:

Darren Drennan’s goal was aided by a massive Tadgh Doran puckout and the goalkeeper was excellent. He made a superb point blank save to deny an Aidan Corby goal and his long & accurate puckouts, led to other scores and chances. Doran was also quick off the mark and displayed awareness as he came out to intercept a ball before Picky Maher got to it, to prevent a goal chance.  Zane Keenan made an immediate impact as a 2nd half sub scoring 1-1 in quick succession, in the space of 5 minutes.  In defence, corner back Andrew Mortimer was excellent and he made 2 strong tackles and created 2 turnovers to prevent Cillian Dunne getting through on goal.
