Recent Laois Stats:
Congratulations to Mark Timmons on becoming just the fourth Laois footballer to make 50 senior championship appearances.
Mark Timmons was also the 26th Laois footballer to make 4+ championship appearances against Carlow. Eight of those players made five apps.
Only two players made six – Martin Dempsey & Ross Munnelly.
Mark Barry scored 1-6 vs Carlow last week.
It’s only the 23rd time that a Laois footballer has scored 9+ points in a championship match. Barry has accounted for the last three times. Mark Barry’s goal came from a penalty and he is the both the 20th and 21st known SFC penalty goal scorer for Laois. (2023 vs Down and 2024 vs Carlow)
Rioghan Murphy is only the 11th known Laois footballer to score 5+ points on his cship debut. The last before him was Donie Kingston (2008).
Round 1 Recap: Laois vs Carlow on Sunday May 12th in Laois Hire O’Moore Park
Laois have a quick turnaround and now hope to bounce back from their draw result vs Carlow when they travel to Aughrim to take on Wicklow.
In the draw vs Carlow, the standout players for Laois were: Mark Barry was awarded a place on GAA.ie’s Football Team of The Week as a result of his great performance scoring 1-6.
Rioghan Murphy on his Championship debut, was fantastic and scored 1-2 from play.
Simon Fingleton also impressed on his Championship starting debut after making great runs forward with the ball and had plenty of pace when he was in possession, adding a point from play to his tally also.
Dylan Kavanagh had a good game in defence for Laois.
Other Laois scorers were: Evan O’Carroll 0-4. Kevin Swayne 0-1. Conor Heffernan 0-1. Brian Byrne 0-1. Eoin Buggie 0-1.
Wicklow: are also hoping to bounce back in Round 2 vs Laois, after a disappointing result in Round 1 (a defeat to Fermanagh by 16 pts).
Prior to the Tailteann Cup campaign, Wicklow were relegated from Div.3 but went on to get a brilliant win over Westmeath (by 1pt) in Round 1 of the Leinster SFC. They were unlucky to be defeated (by 1pt) by Kildare in the Leinster quarter final after Wicklow produced an excellent performance that day vs Kildare too.
Standout players: Oisin McGraynor, Dean Healy and John Paul Nolan have all been very lively in attack.
Wicklow vs Laois: Previous meeting in Aughrim.
Leinster SFC Round 1 on April 24th 2022 in Echelon Park, Aughrim.
Wicklow: 5-15
Laois: 4-12
