First Half:

The match opened at a lively pace, with Castletown’s Tom Óg Phelan getting the first score of the game. Abbeyleix responded quickly; after Callum Peters won a free for Castletown that was converted by Ray Goode. Abbeyleix began to assert themselves. In the 4th minute, Diarmuid Fennell set the standard for the Abbeyleix defense with a fantastic tackle on Kyron Cuddy.

Shortly after for Abbeyleix, Joe Cole sent a brilliant long ball into full-forward Declan Iguma, whose blistering goal effort was brilliantly deflected over the bar by Castletown goalkeeper Oran McKelvey for a crucial save.

Abbeyleix edged ahead 0-02 to 0-01 after 8 minutes before Kyron Cuddy immediately leveled matters with a free. Castletown corner-back Ethan Neville caught the eye early, defending brilliantly with two key interceptions and turnovers in the opening ten minutes while driving out from the back.

Abbeyleix produced a moment of magic when Joe Cole played an excellent flick-on to wing-back Sean O’Donnell, who pointed from the wing to put Abbeyleix 0-03 to 0-02 ahead. Abbeyleix’s defense, anchored by the outstanding Diarmuid Fennell, continued to frustrate the Castletown attack, repeatedly winning frees out and turning over possession.

A sharp move involving Declan Iguma set up Cormac Byrne for a score from play, keeping the Castletown defense on high alert. Castletown responded through a point from Cian Kirwan in the 17th minute (0-04 to 0-03), before Tom Óg Phelan clipped over a fine point from play on 20 minutes to tie the game at 0-04 apiece.

Kyron Cuddy then pointed a free to put Castletown ahead, but Diarmuid Fennell pulled off another interception from a long ball, directly initiating a counter-attack that ended with Daniel Jones pointing from play to level it at 0-05 each on 25 minutes.

Tom Óg Phelan pointed a free on 40 minutes to reduce the deficit to one, but the turning point arrived on 42 minutes. Phelan broke through from midfield and buried a stunning goal from play, surging Castletown into a two-point lead at 2-06 to 0-10.

From here, Kyron Cuddy took complete control of the match alongside Phelan. Cuddy first won a ’65 that Phelan converted, before hitting two back-to-back world-class points from play. Cathal Noone pulled one back for Abbeyleix on 53 minutes (2-09 to 0-13), but Castletown’s lethal tandem struck again: Cuddy forced a turnover in midfield, made a tearing run, and linked up with Phelan before scoring another jaw-dropping point from near the sideline 55 – 60 meters out to make it 2-10 to 0-13 at the 55-minute mark.

In the dramatic final five minutes, Abbeyleix threw everything forward. However, pressure from the Castletown defense forced Abbeyleix into two short efforts and a wide, while a late 21-meter free for Abbeyleix was saved.
