Tom Shiel named EirGrid U21 Player of the Month 2015-03-16 12:34:00

Laois U21 footballer Tom Shiel has been named the EirGrid Player of the Month for February. He netted the award for his outstanding performance against Wexford in the opening round of the EirGrid GAA U21 Football Leinster Championship.

Shiel put an impressive 2-2 on the scoreboard in Enniscorthy which contributed significantly to Laois’ 10 point win over Wexford. His first goal was against the run of play and gave his team a much needed lift after a slow start. The Stradbally man then scored a free and a point from play before hitting the net for the second time in the latter half of the game to secure victory.

This is the inaugural EirGrid Player of the Month award which will recognise the outstanding players of the EirGrid GAA U21 Football All Ireland Championship as chosen by the Gaelic Writers’ Association.

Rosemary Steen of EirGrid commented; “I would like to extend my sincere congratulations to Tom on winning this award. Tom’s performance for Laois was outstanding and we are delighted to recognise this. Tom is certainly a star of the future.”

As well as the EirGrid Player of the Month awards EirGrid will also recognise the top players of the Championship through the 21 Under 21 awards, voted for by members of the Gaelic Writers Association. These will be presented at the conclusion of the competition.
